How to Enable Encryption in Facebook Messenger
The end-to-end message encryption feature that was promised by Facebook to Messenger users back in July is now available to every messenger user. Its the new “Secret Conversations” functionality, that is now available to all 900 million users of the facebook’s messenger. But their new end-to-end encryption doesn’t turn on automatically, however. You have to turn it on manually for each conversation.
If you want to start a new encrypted conversation:
- Tap the new conversation icon at the top right.
- Tap “Secret” in the top right.
- Choose your recipient and begin messaging.
If you want to turn an your current conversation into an encrypted Secret Conversation:
- Open the message thread.
- Tap the circle icon next to the video call icon.
- Tap “Secret Conversation” to switch it on.
If you don’t see any of the above options, maybe the recipient doesn’t have updated to the latest version of Facebook Messenger. They’ll need to update their app to make Secret Conversations work. Secret Conversations also don’t allow us to send videos and GIFs, but you can still share pictures and can use stickers. And not an important thing that you can only have access to your Secret Conversations only from the device it was turned on. So if you start an encrypted chat on your phone, that’s the only place you can send and receive the encrypted messages for that specific conversation.
